The characters are actually very unique, though this is a deck builder they gave each character abilities that make them stand apart. You can get more characters, more cards, and more items as you go. Each run you discover new cards and new items to mess with. The solutions to some of the combat puzzles are not obvious at first, but the more you play the more you feel like you can shape your path to the top by choosing to a type of boss that hurts you early. I’m going to take a stab in the dark and say this is a song about war. “I guess it had to happen someday soon/Wasn’t nothing to hold them down/They would rise from among us like a big balloon/Take the sky, forsake the ground.” These lines seem to contradict that notion: Some say this is a song about a couple who endured through hardship. The closing lines, in fact, talk about broken hearts, dreams running dry and the older generation passing on. The hope-filled lyrics of the first verse (“We were ring-around-the-rosy children/They were circles around the sun/Never give up, never slow down/Never grow old, never ever die young”) and second verse do not make a comeback in this song. What’s clear, at least from a surface level, is that everything is hunky dorky in this song until bad things started to happen. There’s more than meets the eye to “Never Die Young” by James Taylor. “Forever Young” by Rod Stewart, A Song About Growing Up (Or Not) That certainly reflects TMBG’s enduring career in some ways too.īut whether you were an “insider” or “outsider” as a youth, maybe you can find yourself in this song. The challenge is in being told that you’re an outsider. ![]() While that may be the case, there seems to be a deeper meaning – one where the reference to “youth culture” starts to make more sense.įlansburgh once shared about the idea of insiders and outsiders and said that there’s nothing painful about being an outsider. Flansburgh once said he wrote it as a tribute to his dog Iggy. Their songs are impossibly catchy while being quirky and oftentimes difficult to interpret. They Might Be Giants represents the unique and eccentric collaboration between bandmates guitarist John Flansburgh and keyboardist John Linnell. It's okay to maintain a childlike attitude. “Well, when I’m lyin’ in my bed at night/I don’t want to grow up/Nothing ever seems to turn out right/I don’t want to grow up/How do you move in a world of fog/That’s always changing things?/Makes me wish that I could be a dog/Well, when I see the price that you pay/I don’t want to grow up/I don’t ever want to be that way/I don’t want to grow up.” Plainly, it’s a song about how things can get more complex in adulthood. Tom Waits’ “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up” doesn’t have any hidden meanings. While it’s always a good idea to be responsible for yourself, you can still take a childlike (note: not childish) approach to your life. ![]() Most people assume that growing up is a necessity and an inevitability. I would rather have a linux kernel with the world keeping an eye on its security, than some closed box firmware that I have no idea what lurks within. Apply this with regular updates of your OpenWRT firmware and actually you stand way better chance of not being hit by old unpatched issues than firmware that isnt updated and/or end of life. The use of Linux kerrnels, in my view, makes devices more secure - the code is open and bugs are addressed by the community. ![]() ![]() Its less effort than the OEM using the Linux SDK from the chipset manufacturer. Its super common that the router vendor supplied firmware is OpenWRT rebranded. You will find that invariably, the factory firmware of most SOHO devices run linux. My main source of info has been Michael Horowitz’s site.Ĭustom firmwares seem to be larger than the default and that the use of Linux kernels (AFAIK) can make them more susceptible Sorry for bombarding you with all these questions–it’s just that router security has always been a main concern and I’ve never gotten a hold of someone with the relevant expertise. What about hardware firewalls? Are they overkill for individuals? Since you seem like a router buff, what are your thoughts on taking a tiny distro like Alpine Linux and making an RPi router, maybe with VPN? How would that compare to a DD-WRT SOHO or a more professional router? I’m even exploring RPi routers, which is a nice segue for my questions: This is why I’m beginning to lean towards security-focused commercial brands instead of SOHOs with DD-WRT. AFAIK Open-WRT is far smaller than DD-WRT in that regard.Īs a non-technical person, I can’t take most of the measures you described, so trust is also a big factor. It’s the ones packaging them for mass deployment that leaves me wondering. To be clear: this isn’t an attack on the WRT community writ large. But then I haven’t really looked into the issue much further. One just can’t help but wonder who, if anyone, keeps an eye on all of these builds for all of these routers, and what sustains such a massive operation. DD-WRT firmware is updated frequently, to the tune of multiple betas per month. Now it’s some other maintainer (it’s a mess). For example, DD-WRT was maintained by Kong for a long time–every router had a Kong build. ![]() On top of that, another ‘attack surface’ is the maintainer. As usual, I must stress my lack of technical knowledge, as well as the fact that I was explicitly speculating. I didn’t make a claim that there are hardware vulnerabilities in WRT devices (open- or DD-) what I was saying is that these custom firmwares seem to be larger than the default and that the use of Linux kernels (AFAIK) can make them more susceptible. But by using a robust threat model and countermeasures (such as above) one would hope that if something goes awry because of that, its going to be noticed. That is a downside to commodity hardware. Usually the ports you see are attached to a single switch and only VLANs are separating them. The firewall configuration is monitored on a very regular basis and alerts on any changes. The router itself has no outbound permissions in the firewall other than what I have specifically poked (DNS, for example). The public facing firewall is completely locked down to not allow any inbound connections. Then I have remote logging of things like SSH logins and other events. I couple that with some personal security measures, such as remote sha256sum hashing to attest to the state of every file in the rom, overlay partition and configuration systems ( a kinda poor mans IDS ). I then build OpenWRT locally for this specific device and flash the built ROM. My personal approach is to use commodity hardware with open source drivers available, that supports hardware flow offloading (eg: MT7621A). I think makes a good point re security of a router, but again threat model needs to be considered. I have a finger in the openWRT pie so am very keen to understand if there are some hardware vulnerabilities of devices that you are aware of, which may provide remote access when using custom firmware. Any links to this position? the edit you made links to TA18-106A which is more about default credentials with Telnet/TFTP, SNMP/SMI and “EOL” firmware. Even for routers flashed with DD-WRT or some other custom firmware, I bet the attack surface is non-negligible It just isn’t what I prefer, compared to previous games. Still, it’s good enough, and it won’t bother you to much on its own. Sure, being overpowered makes the game unbalanced, but it’s also one of the charms that make me like this genre. With Avernum, it felt better, and with Exile, even more so.Īlso, the fact that level 30 is max and you can reach it before the end of the game if you do any side quests kind of removes the pleasure of making your characters overpowered. It simply doesn’t feel like there’s enough variety or possibilities. There is no need to conserve your resources. Vitality is there just for show and to maybe make you go back to the local pylon once in a while. You blow all your spells/abilities on tougher battles and then proceed to attack with your main weapon and/or use items until they recharge. In addition to that, the characters also play basically the same. The writing is where Spiderweb games excel. Technically, if you make use of skill bonuses on your equipment, you might be able to “max” the last tree to, but that just makes it even less unique. You are pretty much forced to pick the passive tree and one other, if you wan’t to get the last upgrade for the top skill. Each class has their utility tree, their aggressive tree and their passive tree. The classes just don’t seem unique enough, it’s to unified, to uniform. I have to say, the character development in Avadon is different to previous games and also, not as good. A few minor quests have their own nice little short stories, your companions have a background and it all fits together well enough. It will keep you intrigued, it’s unique, compared to mainstream RPGs (I’m looking at you, Bioware) and it will keep you interested in the game. The story of Avadon is decent, nothing more. I think that the best way to go through the pros and cons is to compare it to Spiderweb’s previous games of the same style – Exile and it’s remake, Avernum. So, now that I’ve completed Avadon: The Black Fortress once, what do I have to say about it? I'm only playing on Hard (not the highest). The Review: Is Avadon a True Spiderweb Game? I die a few times here and there until I figure out how to beat a boss or other strong enemy. I only didn't like having no choice to stand against an obviously malicious character, but other than that so far I like how the stories are told (there has been some decision making too, the conseqquences of which are not yet apparent) and the dungeon crawling is fun and challenging. ![]() I just got done with the third main story mission, though the situations in the second are sure to be revisited later, too many loose ends were left over. ![]() No major complaints from me, I loved that game even though it wasn't an open RPG and so far this is pretty damn good too. You could say it's their Icewind Dale of sorts. It's certainly been much more straightforward than previous Spiderweb games. I bought the game after exhausting the demo's playability. The areas seem pretty large though, with multiple levels each, and the writing, while simple (I'm still basically in my first main quest, though you can do various simple side quests along the way) is better than most games.Īfter I bought it and progressed more they evolved into these: ![]() It's trying to be more accessible I guess, so don't expect the same depth in every way (such as combat, it's neat but it's no d&d). It might not look it, but it's been a joy to play after I got over the initial annoyances and disappointment with certain details here and there. The game drew me in and I can already see the sinister potential the story holds under the rather straightforward introductory fluff I have to go through.
